Are you sitting comfortably? Then I shall begin.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away (welllll, about 3 years ago, Kingston upon Thames) I was working for a dive travel company, producing their next brochure. I’d never dived and just the thought of getting in the sea past my ankles was enough to make me hyperventilate, so I was probably not the best person for the job. Still, I spent hours researching, hunting for photos and writing all about the joys of diving.

Turns out there're only so many times you can write how great something is before you start believing it. A few months later, somewhere off the coast of Nicaragua, I found myself on my first open water descent wondering what the hell I’d gotten myself into. By the time I got back to the surface I was converted and the rest, as they say, is history.

So that, in a nutshell, is how I went from being a jellyfishaphobic*, non-sea-swimming office dweller to a GVI volunteer. Now here I am, just 6 weeks until I touch down in Mexico to start a 6 month dive internship and this is where I’ll keep you up to date with how the adventure unfolds…

* Believe it or not, this isn’t the official term for a fear of jellyfish – who knew?! Apparently there isn’t a term for it – I wiki’d it and everything, so it must be true…
